ButtonHole® AV Fistula Needles with SteriPick®
ButtonHole cannulation is the practice of cannulating an AV fistula by going into the exact same spot repeatedly with a dull needle. This technique has been used world wide for 35 years.1
ButtonHole with SteriPick is designed for the safe and easy removal of the ButtonHole scab that forms when using the Buttonhole technique.
Steripick
- Can be removed without exposing the needle
- Remains sterile until the point of use (removing the scab)
- Ships with the sharp point of the needle protected
- Replaces the need for tweezers or other instruments
- Is available on a wide range of gauges, tubing lengths, rotating hubs, and cannula lengths
Clinical studies have also shown that patients performing buttonhole technique experience
- Less discomfort than the rope-ladder technique using sharp needles2,3
- Fewer missed sticks than the rope ladder technique using sharp needles4
"Self-cannulating is empowering; it gives me control over my access site. I’ve been doing buttonhole cannulation for over 5 years, and I choose to use ButtonHole needles with SteriPick. SteriPick is a safe and simple way to remove my buttonhole scabs. I like knowing SteriPick is sterile right up until the point I use it."- Customer
There should be stringent adherence to infection control steps during Buttonhole cannulation including:
- Washing access and surrounding area with soap and water. Antiseptic soap may be used.
- Disinfection of access and cannulation sites with facility approved disinfectant, ensuring adherence to manufacturer instructions.
- Scabs, if present, must be removed completely following the facility protocol, which may include sterile gauze, scab removal devices, or sterile tweezers. Do not use needle to remove scabs.
- Disinfection of the cannulation site is repeated after scab removal.
- Cannulation is completed using aseptic technique.
- After needle removal, the application of an antibiotic ointment may be considered by the facility.
