Dr. Andrew Shaw is the Chairman of the Department of Intensive Care and Resuscitation at The Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio.
He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, the Royal College of Anaesthetists (U.K.), the American College of Critical Care Medicine, and the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine (U.K.). He also holds a master’s degree in Healthcare Management from Vanderbilt University. Dr. Shaw has practiced cardiothoracic anesthesiology and critical care medicine for more than 25 years in the U.K., U.S., and Canada, and has authored four textbooks and more than 200 original publications.
His research interests include biomarker discovery in acute illness and injury, and observational and pragmatic interventional trials of candidate interventions to prevent and treat adverse outcomes following cardiac surgery, in particular the role of intravenous fluid therapy in acute kidney injury. Dr. Shaw’s research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, the U.S. Department of Defense, private philanthropy, and industry. He is also President of the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists, and Treasurer of the Perioperative Quality Initiative.
