LAWRENCE, Mass., March 20, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — To build awareness for National Kidney Month, NxStage Medical, Inc. (Nasdaq: NXTM), a leading manufacturer of innovative dialysis products, today announced the first annual National Home Hemodialysis Day taking place today, March 20, 2014. In partnership with local and national kidney patient organizations, NxStage is encouraging the more than 26 million Americans1 that may have kidney disease and their supporters to wear a green ribbon to spread the word about kidney disease treatment options including home hemodialysis. In conjunction with this campaign, the Company is launching a national patient-to-patient outreach program called NxStage® + One™. This innovative initiative is based on the premise that one-to-one communication is the most compelling way to spread the word about the benefits of home hemodialysis.
The goal of NxStage + One is to bring patients together and have them interact one-on-one in a grassroots way to educate and inspire each other, said Joe Turk, President of NxStage Medical, Inc. National Home Hemodialysis Day gives us a platform for educating our patients and other kidney disease patients about the significant benefits home hemodialysis may make in their lives.
NxStage is establishing National Home Hemodialysis Day to increase awareness of the health and lifestyle benefits possible with home hemodialysis treatment with the nearly 430,0002 Americans who are currently receiving dialysis treatment, their care partners, families and medical professionals. The Company is sending green ribbons to its wide network of patients, care partners, and kidney support communities throughout this month to raise awareness of this potentially life changing therapy option. In addition, NxStage is asking patients and care partners to share their inspiring stories, videos and photos on social media channels using the hashtag, #HomeHemodialysisDay. NxStage patients will be featured on the Company’s website during the month of March.
The National Kidney Foundation believes that patients should be educated about all available treatment options so they can select the modality that best suits their lifestyle. National Kidney Month is a perfect time for patients to learn more and for their family members and others at risk to get their kidneys checked, said Dr. Beth Piraino, President of the National Kidney Foundation.

About the NxStage System One™
The NxStage System One is the first and only truly portable hemodialysis system cleared for home use by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA). Its simplicity and revolutionary size (just over a foot tall) are intended to allow convenient use in patients’ homes and give patients the freedom to travel with their therapy. When combined with the NxStage Pureflow SL Dialysis Preparation System, patients are able to further simplify, using ordinary tap water to create dialysis fluid on demand. Unlike conventional hemodialysis systems, the System One requires no special infrastructure to operate. Under the guidance of their physician, patients can use the NxStage System One, with their trained partners, where, how and when it best meets their needs – at home or on vacation and at a medically appropriate treatment frequency. www.nxstage.com.
